One Breath At A Time: Delilah’s Weekly Yoga Poses & Affirmations #2
Have you been spending too much time on the computer? Your upper back will be tight. Or were you slouching in that lawn chair as you watched the children playing? Your lower back will feel strained. Or perhaps your golf swing is wreaking havoc on your low back.
Try Easy Seated Spinal Twist to alleviate tightness in the upper and lower back, all the while strengthening your back muscles.
- Place yourself in a cross legged seated position; elevate the back of the hips slightly with a folded blanket, if needed to keep the back straight. Now, inhale as you place your right hand on your left knee with left hand on the floor behind you, fingers pointing away from the body; exhale as you extend the crown of the head toward the ceiling and twist to look over the left shoulder. Hold the pose for five inhales and exhales on the left.
- Now, inhale as you as you place the left hand on the right knee, right hand on the floor behind you with fingers pointing away from the body; exhale as you extend the crown of the head to the ceiling and twist to look over the right shoulder. Hold for five inhales and exhales.
- Return to a neutral seated position and close your eyes for a moment. Notice the sensations in the body and new energy in the back. The benefits of this simple pose are numerous including massaging your abdominal organs and liver and kidneys. It will stretch your shoulders, relieve mild backache and hip pain as it stretches and strengthens the back. And it even stimulates the brain!
